Sean A Smith-Artist Statement

I first heard this quote from Edvard Munch, Norway’s most famous painter, known for his painting “Scream”, in 2009 when I was taking Painting I. I knew from that moment, that was how I wanted to create my art. Not from his style, but from the purpose behind it. I believe as an artist it is my purpose to cross over and communicate with the viewer, to engage them with my work.

My series MASQUE, is a culmination of everything I have learned with my art education as well as a reflection of what I have lived through. In Aesthetics it was brought to light that everyone of us is different now than we were from this morning due to circumstances that have affected the way we perceive the world. These are some images of a few of my pieces from that show. I created a lot of work, many of which were good, but did not make the cut for my final show. What made it into my show were the strongest pieces that came about when I had reached a level in which I was able to release my inhibitions and unthink.

Unthink-(v.) to let it happen, to go on gut instinct, to react to what your innermost soul tells you.
